Awesome is God, the God of Israel
This meditation is based on a passage for April 29, 2010 in the Daily Lectionary Year 2 from the Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) (1993).
Text: Psalm 68
Reflection and Question: Called an “ancient hymn” in the notes of the New Revised Standard Version, this psalm is extravagant praise for a warrior God who defeats every adversary. The images of triumph like “leading captives in train,” and “you may bathe your feet in blood, so that the tongues of your dogs may share from the foe” are quite graphic. Jesus makes no reference to this psalm, but it does have hints of Jesus’ Father in the midst of this fierce sense of God. “God is a God of salvation” and “awesome is God who gives power and strength,” not for war but for love. How is God awesome for you?
